Animated Short Film (Bhanyaat)

BHANYAAT
Animated Short film
Duration of the project - 6 weeks

"Bhanyaat" - An animated short film set in Uttarakhand's Timila village. Dadaji and his grandson face the merciless landslides during their midnight tales, symbolizing the helplessness against nature's fury. As the villagers suffer from climate change caused by capitalist corporations, they must embrace fate despite innocence. A poignant tale of resilience amid adversity.

"Bhanyaat" is a Kumauni culture-specific term with no direct English translation,
expressing the notion of impending doom..

This film was directed by me along with Vibhu Kapil at National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad.
It was our first time making an animated film, the story was quite personal to me,
I enjoyed making it a lot and had a great learning experience.

Here's my contribution in this film.

Inspiration
The story was inspired from a real-life event happened
with one of my close relatives.

Basant Ka and Wife

Pre- Production

Screenplay and Dialogues
Taking inspiration from real life incident I adapted the story to show the problems faced by the
couple because of capitalism using a metaphor and also drawing parallels
between mythologyand reality.
After the initial draft of the story, my friend Vikas helped me with the dialogues. Post which my
grandfather and my other friend Aakash helped me in translating the dialogues in Kumaoni, as I
didn’t want to lose the essence of the story in translation.

Character Design
The character design was inspired from my childhood memories of me and my grandfather. And I
guess most of us can relate to the love and affection we see between the two generations.
Also, wanted to keep the character design simple as it was our first project.

Environment Design
The setup is based out of my home town, Timila in Almora district of Uttarakhand. The houses
over there are usually far from each other in forest and was perfect for our story.

Designing the Pan shot
The shot was designed in four point perspective, so that in the shot we can feel a tilt in it.

Room interior design

Storyboards

Color Script and Concept art
The colors were decided in such a way that initially it was all lively and colorful but as we
proceed towards in the story the colors transition to darken and lose their lively nature.

Animatics
The scratch voice over in animatics was done by Aakash.

Production
The Production was divided into these stages stages
1) Animation

Post Production
Post production was further divided into
- Compositing

Title Design
In the title sequence to give an unsettling feeling the, the title is given a visual vibration
using the scratchy lines. As it also resembles the initial vibrations during landslide.
